It is prohibited to import foods that contain these pesticide residues,
such as mancozeb and glufosinate-ammonium.
On January 5, 2026, according to reports by media outlets such as Reuters and FoodNavigator, the French government announced a ban on the entry of food products containing pesticide residues that have been prohibited for use within the European Union into the French market.
French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu stated that the importation of food products containing residues of herbicides and fungicides is prohibited, including: mancozeb, glufosinate, thiophanate-methyl, carbendazim, etc.
The main imported food products affected include:
1. Tropical or subtropical fruits: mangoes, avocados, guavas
2. Common fruits: grapes, citrus fruits, apples
Food products originating from regions such as South America that are detected with residues of the above-mentioned banned pesticides will be denied entry into France.
France will strengthen the inspection and testing of imported agricultural products to ensure compliance with the specified standards. The relevant ministries will issue a formal administrative decree in the coming days to implement this measure.
The French government described this move as "the first step to protect supply chains and consumer safety, and to avoid unfair competition". This policy is also linked to France’s concerns regarding the EU-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement. The French agricultural sector argues that trade with South American countries such as Brazil and Argentina may lead to an increase in imports of low-cost agricultural products, which may fail to meet the EU’s pesticide regulatory standards.
